Cone Crusher Liner Wear Patterns: Mantle vs Concave

Last updated September 2026 · By SKS Steel Zambia, Foundry & Machine Shop, Kalulushi

Crushed rock formation, the kind of feed material a cone crusher processes

A cone crusher rarely wears its mantle and concave liners evenly, or at the same rate as each other. Reading the wear pattern correctly tells you which liner is close to needing replacement, and whether your crusher setting or feed is causing uneven wear in the first place.

What Mantle and Concave Liners Do

The mantle is the liner fitted over the crushing head, which gyrates inside the bowl. The concave is the liner fitted inside the bowl itself. Rock is crushed in the gap between the two as the head sweeps around the chamber, so both liners are wearing constantly, just against different faces of the same crushing action.

Why the Two Liners Wear at Different Rates

Because the head gyrates rather than rotates in place, the gap between mantle and concave is not constant around the chamber, and neither is the wear. Feed distribution, crusher setting, and how choke-fed the chamber runs all affect where wear concentrates. It is common for one liner to need replacing well before the other, and for wear to be heavier at the top or bottom of a liner than in the middle.

Reading the Wear Pattern

What You See Likely Cause Which Liner
Heavier wear near the top of the chamberFeed distribution favouring one side, or an under-fed chamberBoth, but usually the mantle first
Heavier wear near the bottomCrusher running too fine a setting for the feedConcave first
Uneven wear around the circumferenceUneven feed distribution into the chamberBoth, unevenly
Output size drifting coarser over timeCombined liner wear opening the crusher settingBoth, check dimensions

When to Replace and What to Check First

Before ordering a replacement set, check these first:

  • Measure the actual crushing gap at several points around the chamber, not just one, since wear is rarely even.
  • Check your crusher setting against feed size if wear is concentrated at the bottom, since this often points to running too fine a setting for the material.
  • Replace in pairs when both are close to end of life, since running one badly worn liner against a fresh one changes the crushing action and accelerates wear on the new part.
  • Send us your bowl and head model or a worn sample if you are not sure which liner profile you are running, and we will confirm before casting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not always. They often wear at different rates, but it is common practice to replace both if one is close to its limit, since running a worn liner against a new one changes the crushing gap and speeds up wear on the new part.

Sometimes. Uneven wear concentrated at the top or bottom often points to a setting mismatched to the feed size, and adjusting it can slow further uneven wear, though it will not undo wear already present.

Yes. Send us your bowl and head model, or a worn liner, and we can confirm the profile and cast a matching replacement.
