Ball Mill vs SAG Mill Liners: What Actually Differs

Ball mills and SAG mills grind ore differently, and their liners are built for different jobs. Fitting the wrong liner profile or alloy to the wrong mill wastes money either way, either through premature wear or through paying for toughness the mill does not need.

What Ball Mills and SAG Mills Actually Do Differently

A ball mill grinds ore using steel balls as the grinding medium, tumbling inside a rotating cylinder. A SAG mill, short for semi-autogenous grinding, uses the ore itself as much of the grinding medium, with a smaller charge of steel balls added to assist. SAG mills typically handle larger, run-of-mine feed straight from primary crushing, while ball mills usually take already-reduced material for finer grinding.

Why Their Liners Are Not Interchangeable

Because a SAG mill relies on the ore itself for part of the grinding action, its liners are shaped with larger lifting bars to lift and drop the heavier, coarser charge. A ball mill liner profile is shallower, designed to lift a bed of steel balls rather than large rock. Fitting a SAG-style liner into a ball mill wastes lifting height on a charge that does not need it, and fitting a ball mill liner into a SAG mill wears out fast under the heavier impact.

How to Spec a Replacement Set

Before ordering, confirm these details:

  • Which mill you are running: ball or SAG, since the lifter profile is not interchangeable between them.
  • Feed size and ore hardness: this determines whether Mn13, Mn18, or a high-chrome option suits your throughput best.
  • Existing liner dimensions or a worn sample: we can cast to match without needing an OEM drawing.
  • Replace worn sections as a set where possible, since mismatched wear between old and new liners changes the mill’s internal profile and grinding efficiency.

For alloy selection between manganese and high-chrome options, see our material comparison guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The lifter profiles are built for different charge types, a SAG liner wastes lifting height in a ball mill, and a ball mill liner wears out fast under the heavier impact inside a SAG mill.

Manganese steel is the common choice for its impact resistance and work-hardening under repeated blows, though high-chrome iron can suit specific abrasive ore conditions. We can confirm the right alloy based on your ore and mill type.

Yes. Send us your existing liner dimensions or a worn sample and we can cast a matching replacement set.
